Meet Competition Judges

Judges and Judging Criteria

Alphas and Alpharines Foundation will select judges for the competition based on their knowledge in diverse subjects. The judges will be announced on 18 October 2022.

There will be two rubrics to judge the competition, the rubrics will be for the Writing and Video presentation categories of the competition. Each Judge and the assigned teacher from each school will be send the two rubrics. The teachers will receive the rubrics so they can help guide the leaners into the right direction.

There will be a performance evaluation form to judge for the assigned teacher to win the chance to accompany the leaners to Cape Town.

Mr. Thomas Mtontsi is a science Engagement Officer at the South African Environment Observation Network (SAEON), a business unit of the National Research Foundation (NRF) funded through the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI). Thomas Mtontsi coordinates the integration of Marine Offshore System Science into school sciences introducing learners/students to ocean observation instruments like Argo Floats, Drifter, etc. further facilitating NRF-SAEON Science engagement team school science support.

Dr. Moagabo Ragoasha is currently a lecturer at the University of Cape Town as a research associate with the Nansen Tutu Centre for Marine Environmental Research.  She is also involved as a lecturer in the floating University called SEAmester, which is the first of its kind in South Africa. SEAmester introduces marine science as an applied and cross-disciplinary field o students from around Southern Committee on Oceanic Research) Committer on Capacity Development. 

After completing her undergraduate degree in Environmental science and ocean and atmosphere science, she earned her honors and master’s in ocean and atmosphere science (UCT). Her Ph.D. in physical oceanography was co-badged between the University of Cape Town and the University of Western Brittany (Université de Bretagne Occidentale, UBO). This resulted in Dr. Ragoasha spending 50% of her study years working at UBO under the mentorship of France’s top ocean modelers. After her Ph.D., she did one year of post-doctoral research at UCT and the SEON Egagasini Node. In addition, she is passionate about marine science engagement, student development, and mentoring. She has started “The Blue Planet Completion”, targeting school learners from disadvantaged communities located far from the ocean. The competition aims to create or increase awareness of the ocean (blue planet), its roles, and careers in marine science. 

Mr. BSM Munansangu is currently a doctoral candidate in Molecular biology at Stellenbosch University. He holds a B.Sc., Hons B.Sc., and M.Sc., degrees in Molecular Biology from North-West University (South Africa). He is a member of the South African Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SASBMB), a life member of the Golden key international Honour Society, and a recipient of the National Research Scholarship (NRF).
Ms. Marry-Jane Letsoalo is a Jill of many trades and has a master’s degree in Information Technology. Information System Assurance and Governance is her forte, however, she is equally passionate about financial literacy; hence she wrote the money champion’s book. She is an optimist, a lover of life, an event manager, a philanthropist, and a person that believes that through balanced knowledge sharing and openness about life experiences, more good can be seen in the world. She is an avid reader who is always willing to push boundaries and has recently been reunited with her first love; accounting and is currently pursuing a finance degree. The money champion’s book is her first offering to the world, particularly children’s financial literacy, of which she could not be more proud.
